Self service IT: can it really be achieved in business operations?

We are all used to self service these days whether it be online banking, using ATM’s or supermarket self check out.  Yet the vast majority of business operations still rely on centralised IT which hasn’t been designed to respond with the speed and low cost that some business initiatives demand.  This leaves the business with little option but to use basic tools like spreadsheets to manage the business, or simply recruit more staff.

So is there a way of delivering self service IT without breaking the existing systems and compromising governance and control? A Special Interest Group (SIG) are exploring the possibilities, the risks and the importance of IT governance in delivering a self service IT capability. The SIG will also discuss approaches to building a business case for this type of initiative.
